Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG)

What you will read in this article:
qEEG (Quantitative EEG)

qEEG is a technique that records the brain’s electrical activity like a standard EEG and analyzes it numerically and visually, producing a map of brain function. This map helps identify which areas of the brain are overactive or underactive, which patterns are associated with clinical symptoms, and which treatment programs (e.g., neurofeedback) are most suitable for each individual.

Clinical applications:
  • Assessment of neuropsychological issues: such as attention disorders (ADHD), mood disorders (depression, anxiety), certain learning disorders, and many other conditions.
  • Monitoring brain injuries and TBI: qEEG can reveal functional changes even when structural imaging (MRI/CT) appears normal.
  • Guiding and evaluating neurofeedback therapy: Brain mapping identifies which frequencies/regions to target, and treatment progress can be tracked.

In summary, qEEG serves as a functional tool rather than a structural imaging replacement; it shows activity patterns rather than anatomical structure.

Why qEEG is non-invasive and safe:
qEEG only records electrical signals; no radiation, strong magnetic fields, or stimulating currents are applied, making it very safe and suitable for all ages (children to elderly).

Strengths of qEEG:
  • Sensitivity to functional changes: Can detect subtle functional signs not visible in routine exams or structural imaging.
  • Quantitative and trackable: Results are numerical (e.g., Z-scores), allowing measurement of treatment progress.
  • Clinical and trending use: Can track brain function trends over time, e.g., after injury or during therapy.

Overall, qEEG is a powerful tool for understanding brain function: non-invasive, highly sensitive to functional changes, and especially useful for designing personalized treatments like neurofeedback and assessing their effectiveness. For true clinical value, standard recording, expert interpretation, and integration with the individual’s clinical picture are essential.

At Behjo Clinic, we provide advanced equipment and experienced staff to support you throughout the process.
